The 1970s saw the emergence of hard rock music, one of the most popular subgenres of rock music but also saw the birth of Southern & Country Rock, Hard/Arena Rock, New Wave, Punk Rock, Blues Rock, Soft Rock and Pop Rock

The 70s also saw the formation of funk and disco which became one of the biggest genres of the decade, especially in the mid-to-late 1970s. In Europe, an offshoot known as Euro Disco rose in popularity towards the end of the 1970s. Aside from Disco, Funk, Smooth Jazz, Jazz Fusion, and Soul remained popular throughout the 70s.
